Sonny Dykes Puts Together Tone-Deaf Response to Fan Criticism

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes was given a golden opportunity to connect with the fanbase after a rough stretch, but instead of delivering reassurance or accountability, he opted for indifference.

When asked what his message was to fans who feel like the program is slipping in the wrong direction, Dykes said, “People can say what they want to say.” That was it. No follow-up, no real context, just a throwaway line that feels way too casual for the current state of things in Fort Worth.

This wasn’t a random question tossed his way after a meaningless game. It came after TCU got outclassed in a game it badly needed to win. The Horned Frogs are 6-4 overall and below .500 in Big 12 play, which is a brutal look, less than two years removed from playing for a national title. The trajectory is clear, and fans aren’t wrong for feeling concerned. They’ve seen what the ceiling can be, and what’s happening now doesn’t look like anything close to that.

That’s why the response hits as tone-deaf. Saying “people can say what they want” sounds like a guy brushing off criticism rather than owning the moment. It comes across like the fans don’t matter, like their opinions are background noise that isn’t worth addressing. That kind of message doesn’t just fall flat; it makes things worse. It creates distance between the program and the people who actually care about it.

In a place like TCU, where football is the pulse of the campus and the community, that kind of disconnect matters. Dykes doesn’t need to deliver a full-blown apology tour, but there’s a middle ground between deflection and panic. A simple acknowledgment of the frustration and a glimpse at what’s being done to fix it would’ve gone a long way.

Dykes still has time to right the ship, but this isn’t trending in the right direction. And brushing off criticism like it’s meaningless? That won’t win anybody over.
