Big 12 quarterbacks are front and center, and TCU coach Sonny Dykes couldn’t be more confident.
Joining The Jim Rome Show recently, Dykes highlighted the quality QB play emerging across the conference. “I do believe it’s probably the strongest league in college football at the quarterback position,” he said, singling out talent, depth, and star power across league rosters.

Dykes’ remarks highlight a league brimming with signal-callers ready to take center stage. With players like Josh Hoover at TCU, Sam Leavitt at Arizona State, Rocco Becht at Iowa State, and Avery Johnson at Kansas State, and many more leading their respective teams, the overall depth and star power at the position across the league are stacking up.
Even beyond those names, contenders such as Colorado’s quarterback tandem of Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis, and Utah’s new face from the Mountain West, Devon Dampier, add to growing depth. Dykes believes that when these talents hit their peak in 2025, no conference will match the Big 12 at quarterback.
Dykes is entering Year 4 as head coach in Fort Worth. His confidence in quarterback play comes from seeing Hoover break TCU records in 2024, along with the league’s ability to develop and showcase QBs in diverse offensive systems.
Those words are bold, but not unfounded. With conferences everywhere fighting for notoriety and a level playing field, the quarterback position is a significant reason the Big 12’s national relevance continues to climb.
With several QBs now entering elite tracking as preseason favorites, Dykes believes the Big 12 has a chance to showcase a quarterback era for college football through all of 2025.
