When you look at the Oklahoma Sooners roster for the 2025 season, it's beyond clear that it's much better on paper. The receiver room is better, the entire defense is better outside of a few positions, the quarterback room is better, and the running back room is better.

Now, the offensive line could be better in 2025, but there are some unknowns there that we really don't know about yet. But the quarterback room is the big one. Not only did the Sooners get the best player in the transfer portal in John Mateer, but they also got some amazing depth going into 2025 that they didn't have last year.

Behind Mateer is Michael Hawkins, who played a ton last year as a true freshman. Then there is Jett Niu, the former three star recruit in the 2025 class, and Cole Gonzales behind him. Now, they have added another guy who has legit starrting experience, only making the mosty important position group that much better.

Oklahoma Sooners get transfer QB Gavin Frakes

Gavin Frakes, a quarterback from Norman, Oklahoma, is now going to be playing for his hometown team. Frakes is coming from the University of Virginia, after being at New Mexico State before that. At 6’4”, 230 pounds, Frakes has some good size, too.

Frakes started his college career at New Mexico State for two years before moving to Virginia in 2024, where he redshirted as the third-string quarterback and saw no regular-season action. In Virginia’s spring game, he completed 7 of 10 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. At Mexico State in 2022, Frakes threw for 700 passing yards in 11 games, with seven interceptions and four touchdowns.

After Virginia’s starter transferred and new quarterbacks arrived, Frakes entered the transfer portal and chose OU, as he looks to come back home with two years of eligibility left.
