South Carolina is staring at a bleak situation

South Carolina football felt like it was finally headed somewhere. That makes the last two weeks particularly frustrating.

The Gamecocks entered 2026 with legitimate expectations after LaNorris Sellers returned for another season, Shane Beamer talked openly about the team's potential and South Carolina had multiple players viewed as potential first-round picks in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Four games into the season, those expectations have turned into another season of questions. South Carolina fell to 2-2 Saturday with a 49-18 loss at Alabama. The Gamecocks have now lost 11 of their last 13 games against Power Four competition and seven straight against SEC opponents. 

A week earlier, South Carolina blew a 16-point lead at home against Mississippi State in a 41-34 loss. That followed a 2025 season in which the Gamecocks went 4-8, including a 31-30 loss at Texas A&M after leading by 27 points at halftime.

South Carolina in a tough spot

Those collapses are becoming difficult to dismiss as isolated incidents. Neither is the offensive regression.

Sellers returned to school rather than entering the NFL Draft and entered the season with legitimate first-round potential. Instead, his performance has become another major concern. Against Alabama, he completed 18 of 30 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown and one interception, which was returned for a touchdown.

Then there is the situation involving Dylan Stewart. Stewart is one of the most talented players in the country and one of the top edge prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft. After a late hit and a fourth-quarter punch against Alabama, he was suspended indefinitely by Beamer.

Beamer's decision was defensible from a program-accountability standpoint. A coach cannot have one standard for most of his roster and another for his most talented player.

But the fact that South Carolina is dealing with this situation at all adds another layer to an increasingly difficult season. The frustration extends beyond the field, too.

For a fan base that has spent years waiting for South Carolina to take the next step, another season of underachievement is testing its patience. The Gamecocks have had enough talent to create genuine optimism, but the results have not followed. Even the program's own expectations have made the current situation harder to accept.

Beamer acknowledged after the Alabama loss that the responsibility falls on him and that South Carolina needs to become more consistent. That consistency has been missing for far too long.

Kentucky comes to Columbia next, followed by a road game at Florida before the open date. But Kentucky is ranked No. 24, and Florida just demolished No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28. The margin for error is disappearing.

South Carolina has spent much of the Beamer era trying to convince its fan base that the breakthrough is coming. The 2022 and 2024 seasons provided reasons to believe it. The current stretch is doing the opposite. At some point, potential stops being enough.
