Sanders looked like one of the best running backs in the nation at points. The back had his best season in 2022, rushing for 1,443 yards with 10 touchdowns. Sanders also caught 28 passes for 271 yards and 2 receiving TDs that season.
In 2023, Sanders struggled with injury and played in just 6 games. Sanders finished the 2023 season with 209 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards.
Some may wonder why Sanders would choose to go to the Gamecocks. Well, the Gamecocks recently hired Dowell Loggains to be their offensive coordinator. Loggains spent the two previous seasons in Fayetteville as the tight ends coach. That familiarity could have played a role in Sanders deciding to jet across the SEC.
The Gamecocks have been busy in the portal. In addition to Sanders, the team has also added wide receivers Jared Brown and Jayden McGowan, as well as running back Oscar Adaway III and defensive lineman Jerome Simmons. The team has done a solid job of reloading at the skill positions and should be in a good position to have a solid offense in 2024.
Brown caught 58 passes for 740 yards and 4 TDs for Coastal Carolina in 2023. McGowan caught 36 passes for 383 yards for Vanderbilt in 2023.
Adaway split time with Ayo Adeyi in 2023 for North Texas and ended with 738 yards and 6 TDs. The back could form a lethal combo with fellow transfer Raheim Sanders.
