The Florida Gators had their Orange & Blue spring game on Saturday afternoon that saw team Blue defeat team Orange 38-32. The one player we didn't get to see outside of a few snaps was quarterback DJ Lagway, who has been nursing a shoulder injury with rest.
After the game on Saturday, head coach Billy Napier spoke to the media about Lagway's injury and gave a very positive update.
“He’ll start throwing here in a couple weeks,” Napier said. “In general, very positive there. The lower-body stuff is good. And he’s kind of getting in position for the next step. But in general, there’s a lot of positives. Everything is on schedule.”
It's a huge thing for Lagway to begin throwing in a couple of weeks and for everything to be on schedule. HIs presence is going to be huge for the Gators in 2025, especially with how he finished with a depleted group of pass catchers at the end of the season.
We learned more about his shoulder injury from USA Today's Matt Hayes on Thursday and that his injury will both require surgery at some point and stems from his high school days.
The two people close to the situation said the shoulder injury, more than likely, will need surgery at some point. The hope is offseason rest – as many as six months of non-throwing – will strengthen the shoulder, or at least allow Lagway to play the 2025 season.
The good thing here is that Gators fans can breathe a small sigh of relief when it comes to Lagway. Yes, you would much rather prefer him to be healthy, but the trajectory is really good and if something ends up happening during his rehab process, both Aidan Warner and Harrison Bailey had flashes of great play during the spring game.
Things are looking good for the Gators.
