Standouts From LSU's 2023 Spring Game
USA TODAY Sports

The Tigers capped off their 2023 Spring Camp with their annual scrimmage in Death Valley on Saturday. It was a showcase that ended in a 32-32 tie, but Brian Kelly and his coaching staff certainly had the chance to see the improvement this team has made over the last few weeks.

Headlined by wide receiver Kyren Lacy, there’s a long list of Tigers who stood out on Saturday in various areas, but Lacy looked the part from start to finish.

Here are three standouts from Saturday's Spring Game:

Kyren Lacy

Lacy stole the show on Saturday. It all started with a gorgeous one-handed reception over the middle that resulted in a touchdown on the first play during the scrimmage. Lacy showed off his vertical while pulling in a catch over his head on a “SportsCenter Top 10” type play.

A player who had a few drop issues last season, it was evident he put in work this offseason to improve in a few areas. It was an efficient day for the second-year Tiger who has all the makings of breaking out this season alongside Malik Nabers. Entering his second season with Jayden Daniels as his signal-caller, the chemistry continues to grow.

Lacy ended the day with four receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Laterrance Welch

You could say Welch was the big winner during Saturday’s showcase. The youngster posted a few pass breakups while being lockdown in coverage. Despite Zy Alexander and JK Johnson taking first-team reps to start, it was Welch who came in and made a statement.

Welch made a few big-time plays downfield in coverage when the Tigers took deep shots with Chris Hilton and Jalen Brown. LSU has their fair share of cornerbacks for this season, and Welch certainly isn’t guaranteed a starting spot, but expect him to get some run for the Tigers this season. He’s been exceptional and taking strides in the right direction this offseason as this program transitions to summer work.

Whit Weeks

It’s a small sample size for Weeks but he looked ready when given an opportunity. The highlight of the day for the early-enrollee was his 55-yard pick-six on fellow freshman Rickie Collins. A play that could go under-the-radar, the poise and focus was on full display.

Weeks went up, reeled in the interception, then showcased his speed in open field to return it for the score. LSU isn’t necessarily in the clear from a depth perspective at linebacker, and with Weeks stepping up to the plate, it’s a positive sign moving forward.

The Tigers remain with Harold Perkins and Omar Speights as their top two guys along with Greg Penn, but moving forward, both Whit and West Weeks will be key for this program.
