Former Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli announced his commitment to Syracuse on Wednesday. After spending the last three seasons at Notre Dame, Angeli entered the transfer portal last week. Angeli was in a three-way competition with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey for the Irish’s coveted QB1 spot this spring. He has two years of eligibility remaining and is the second quarterback in the transfer portal to commit to Syracuse. LSU’s Rickie Collins has also committed to the Orange.
Rated a three-star transfer by 247Sports, Angeli is the 18th-best quarterback and the 243rd-best transfer. A back-up to Sam Hartman two years ago and to Riley Leonard last season, Angeli threw for 268 yards with three touchdowns last year. Angeli went 6-for-7 for 44 yards in the Irish’s Orange Bowl win over Penn State. During the 2023 season, Angeli threw for 504 yards with seven touchdowns and just one interception.
After entering the transfer portal, Angeli shared a message to Irish Nation on social media. “Thank you for an amazing three years in South Bend wearing the blue and gold,” Angeli wrote in the post. “It has truly been an incredible journey as a student-athlete at Notre Dame, and I am eternally grateful for the memories made along the way.
“To the coaches and entire Notre Dame football staff, thank you for giving me an opportunity to play college football and helping me better myself on and off the field. To Irish Nation, your passion and support is what makes playing in Notre Dame Stadium, so special.”
Angeli will return to South Bend when Syracuse travels to face Notre Dame on Senior Day on Nov. 22. Angeli’s coming back to Notre Dame Stadium in orange and blue promises to inject extra intrigue into Notre Dame’s Senior Day festivities in South Bend. Angeli’s return to his old stomping grounds promises to add a compelling layer to a game already marked by the celebration of graduating Irish players. It will likely be a poignant return for a former Irish quarterback whose journey has taken an unexpected turn.
