Steve Sarkisian made a bold 50-50 bet on a five-star recruit and Texas received a definitive answer

The Texas Longhorns are in the hunt for the top overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. Five-star trench talent Lamar Brown would be welcomed on any campus in the country, and the elite prospect put himself in a unique position for his future with one key question.

Brown was deciding whether to focus on playing defensive tackle or interior offensive line. The Erwinville, Louisiana, native stands 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds, so his physical profile fits either.

He just released his top four official visits for this offseason, and each of the programs made the right bet that Brown would end up on the defensive side of the ball. Texas made the cut, alongside Miami, Texas A&M, and LSU.

Brown cancelled his visit with Florida State in order to visit Texas on June 6.

“It is really those four schools,” Brown told On3’s Chad Simmons at the time. “It really came down to me deciding to play defensive line in college. A lot of schools wanted to play offensive line, but those four schools were the ones recruiting me the hardest as a defensive lineman.”

New defensive line coach LaAllen Clark is proving to be quite the asset after moving from Ohio State. Brown said he's the primary reason he's interested in Texas.

“When I look at schools, I wanna have that great relationship with my position and they [Texas] top it off,” he said. “I will 100% say that I have the best relationship with Coach Clark than any other school I’m interested in right now. And this is not even a knock off to the other DL coaches because I have a great relationship with them also.”

“Coach Steve and the staff always made a push at some point but what really boosted it was when Coach Clark went there,” he added. “Me and Coach Clark’s bond outside of football is amazing. When I was a little kid, we knew each other well. I used to go to his football camps and his dad coached me at my middle school for basketball.”

Here's a quick scouting report on Brown from Cody Bellaire when he participated in 2023.

Brown showed why he is one of the most highly coveted prospects in the 2026 class. The frame is fantastic, he will add weight throughout his frame with ease and is one of the best big-man movers for his age I have ever seen with my own eyes. Whether it is on offense or defense, Brown showed why he garners so much attention when he shows up to an event.
