West Virginia assistant University football assistant coaches Blaine Stewart and Bilal Marshall were selected to The American Football Coaches Association's (AFCA) 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute on Monday.
Marshall and Stewart are wrapping up their first season at West Virginia following an 8-4 regular season record and are in the early states of preparing the Mountaineers for the Duke's Mayo Bowl scheduled for Dec. 27 versus the North Carolina Tarheels.
Marshall rejoined the staff in January as the wide receivers coach after serving one season as the receivers coach at VMI. He spent two seasons under WVU head coach Neal Brown as a graduate assistant from 2020-21. The Miami Gardens (FL) native began his coaching career at Champagnat High School in Miami, Florida, where he was the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for a team that won the Class 2A State Championship in 2019.
Stewart was hired as the tight ends coach in January after a stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. From 2018-20, Stewart was a coaching assistant to Steelers head Mike Tomlin's staff. In his first two NFL seasons, he worked with the offense and special teams and was responsible for quality control of the entire offensive unit. He coached the defensive scout team, compiled weekly offensive installation plans and produced opponent scouting reports. He worked as the assistant wide receivers coach his last two years in Pittsburgh, assisting in game plan preparation and installation, coached the defensive scout team, broke down opponent film and conducted self-scouts.
The AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute is a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession. Selected participants are invited to attend the one-day institute that features a curriculum of interactive lectures focused on topics specifically tailored to emphasize leadership in the coaching profession, ethics, influential responsibilities, career progression, and family balance.
