Sun Devils defensive lineman blasts Longhorns for the way coaches ‘kicked me out’ and encouraged him to quit

At least one Arizona State Sun Devil is really hoping that Texas knocks off Clemson in the first round of the College Football Playoffs. Zac Swanson is looking for some revenge in the quarterfinals.

Swanson was a reserve defensive lineman for the Longhorns in 2022 and 2023 after being the fourth-best prospect in Arizona coming out of high school.

To be fair, Swanson toiled behind two future NFL draft picks in Byron Murphy and T’Vondre Sweat. But apparently, his exit interview with Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff didn’t go so well.

He likely wouldn't have played ahead of seniors Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton this season, either. Both had terrific seasons.

Swanson transferred back home to Arizona State, and based on his recent comments, it worked out well.

“That's a team who kicked me out and said I was never going to be good enough to play there,” Swanson told reporters this week. “So that's something that has been on my agenda for a while. It's like a dream scenario. So I'm very excited about that.

“Exactly what was said is, if you want to stay at Texas, you might as well quit football and just go to school here. So lot of motivation there for me.”

Unfortunately, these types of hard-edge conversations have been happening for decades. Coaches “encourage” players to look elsewhere or transfer, thus freeing up their scholarship they can give to someone else.

Rarely do players come right out and report what happened behind closed doors, though. It's also worth noting that Bo Davis, the defensive line coach when Swanson was at UT, is now coaching at LSU.

“I mean, it was probably the worst thing that was ever said to me, and it was just said so carelessly, like they didn't care that, like it was changing my entire life,” Swanson said. “Two years there, I made friends, I like a girlfriend there, everything. And then they tell me that and expect me to get up and leave the next day.

“So it was probably the worst thing ever, but now, being here and experiencing everything I've experienced here at home. It's the best choice, best thing that could have ever happened to me.”

If Texas beats Clemson on Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium, the Longhorns will advance to face the Sun Devils in the Peach Bowl, which is the CFP quarterfinals.

Safe to assume that Swanson will be ready.
