The Syracuse Orange had great success last offseason in the transfer portal. They landed former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord, who came to the program and only ended up leading the nation in passing yards with 4,779 yards.
McCord is now going to try his hand at the NFL while Syracuse head coach Fran Brown is looking for his next starting quarterback.
In that regard, the Orange made an interesting move via the transfer portal on Wednesday. Former Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli committed to the Orange after three seasons in West Bend.

Angeli has primary been a backup at Notre Dame but he has gotten some significant playing time in his sophomore and junior seasons. In 2023, he threw for 504 yards and seven touchdowns compared to one interception in eight games.
He started Notre Dame's bowl game against Oregon State and threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns on 15-of-19 passing. He was Riley Leonard's backup in 2024 and played significant minutes in the Fighting Irish's 27-24 win over Penn State in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. In that game, he completed 6-of-7 passes for 44 yards while Leonard was shaking off a big hit in the second quarter.
Angeli is a former three-star recruit from Oradell, New Jersey, ranked as the No. 21 quarterback in the 2022 class.
LSU transfer Rickie Collins was named as Syracuse's starter for next season by Brown on April 8, but it will be interesting to see if Angeli can give him a run for his money this fall.
At the very least, the Orange now have one heck of a good backup.
