Well that was certainly fun.
The Syracuse offense wasn’t awful in 2023, but in came offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon, and out came the nation’s best passing attack, averaging 370 yards per game for an attack that averaged 34 points and 468 yards per game.
Best of all, the offense was in total control of the tempo - Syracuse was No. 6 in the nation and tops in the ACC in time of possession.
There’s a whole lot of turnover, and in coach Fran Brown’s second season, the line is undergoing an overhaul with transfers for the line and at quarterback. But nothing stops. The Orange will keep winging it around, but …

- Kyle McCord is a Philadelphia Eagle now. A solid starter for 2023 Ohio State, he transferred over to Syracuse and threw for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns, and he won’t be easily replaced. In comes Rickie Collins, a star prospect for LSU who saw a little bit of time. Now he’ll have to hold off Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli in fall camp.
- The receiving corps is all but starting over, but it’s doing it with in-house players. Star tight end Oronde Gadsden is gone after catching 73 passes, and now it’s up to Dan Villari to take over the spot. He won’t be the same target, but he’ll be a midrange force.
Trebor Pena is gone to Penn State, and leading receiver Jackson Meeks is done, but Darrell Gill is on the outside after averaging over 18 yards per catch, Justin Ross-Simmons averaged over 22 yards per grab, and Emmanuel Ross is a promising young slot receiver. Johntay Cook II (Texas) is a deep threat who should make big plays right away.
- The line wasn’t awful considering how much pressure was on its shoulders in pass protection. And, considering how miserable past Orange lines were at holding up, it did enough.
Mark Petry, who can play guard or will move to center, but overall, this one will be loaded with transfers. Getting J’Onre Reed (USC) for the inside and Kam Pringle (South Carolina) at tackle will help, but it’ll take all of fall camp to find the right starting five.
- LeQuint Allen is gone to the Jacksonville Jaguars after running for over 1,000 yards and 16 scores, and now it’ll be up to 226-pound No. 2 back Yasin Willis, who only ran for 130 yards and a score, and third-leading back Will Nixon to combine for the job.
