TCU fans breathe a sigh of a relief with latest CFP rankings

TCU has a complicated relationship with the College Football Playoff. The committee began to make amends by moving the Horned Frogs up three spots to No. 4 in the latest rankings.

The Horned Frogs infamously fell from No. 3 to No. 6 in the final CFP poll in 2014 back when the Big 12 didn't have a conference championship game. As a one-loss team entering the final week and no undefeated Power Five team behind them, it was a safe bet for TCU to make the playoff.

No one predicted in 2014 that Ohio State would crush Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game, 59-0. With that victory, Ohio State jumped into the top four and TCU dropped out of the playoff.

Sitting as one of four remaining undefeated teams — the Horned Frogs won't be leapfrogged by anyone if they run the table.

Head coach Sonny Dykes was a guest on ESPN's rankings unveiling and expressed confidence in the committee while cautioning against TCU getting ahead of itself before a crucial game against No. 18 Texas on Saturday night.

"This is early in the process. I have a lot of faith in the committee," said Dykes. "I appreciate the fact they value wins."

Based on the team's initial ranking, the committee won't give the Horned Frogs the benefit of the doubt as a one-loss conference champion. Luckily for the Horned Frogs, they've shown a resiliency this season that will serve them well as they try to finish the job.

ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit asked Dykes about his team's penchant for coming from behind this season, never backing down despite the odds stacked against them. If Dykes' response remains true, TCU will have a chance to play for a national championship.

"We finish strong."
