Over the last few days, there's been some concern that Tennessee Vols defensive line coach Rodney Garner could leave Knoxville for the same position at Auburn, his alma mater.
Auburn had an opening on their coaching staff after defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett was recently hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
VolQuest's Austin Price said this week that he believes Auburn reached out to Garner. But the Tigers weren't successful in poaching Garner from Tennessee.
On Wednesday, news broke that Auburn is promoting defensive assistant Vontrell King-Williams to defensive line coach.
King-Williams previously worked for current Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze from 2020 to 2021 at Liberty.
The expectation was always that Garner would stick around at Tennessee. But when a coach's alma mater comes calling, you just never know where it may lead.
Fortunately for the Vols, Auburn's attempt to hire Garner didn't work out.
