Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar has only played five games in the orange and white, but he's already a fan favorite on Rocky Top.
Aguilar, who transferred from UCLA to Tennessee in May, has been a dream fit for the Vols since arriving on campus a few months ago.
The California native quickly learned Josh Heupel's offense, while winning over his new teammates, before earning the starting job during fall camp.
Aguilar is currently leading the SEC in passing yards, despite the fact that he entered the spring months believing he would be playing in a different conference this fall.
The Vols' offense has been much more explosive in 2025 than it was the last two seasons.

Aguilar, however, thinks the offense can be even more explosive in the second half of the season.
“When you go back and watch film and see there’s still so much more than we can do better at -- all around and starting with me -- it just makes it exciting," said Aguilar on Wednesday. "We’ve been explosive, but we can be more explosive than what we have been if everybody just dials in and gets into the details, starting with me.”

There's definitely some areas where the Vols can improve. Against Mississippi State, for example, sophomore wide receiver Mike Matthews dropped a walk-in touchdown on a deep pass from Aguilar. Matthews also missed a block on a fourth down conversion just before halftime, a play that likely would’ve resulted in a touchdown for running back Star Thomas (not trying to pick on Matthews, he made some huge plays against the Bulldogs).

Heupel loves to say that good teams get better as the season progresses. We'll see if that's true for the Vols over the next few weeks.
