Texas, Georgia reportedly trying to flip five-star safety commit

Xavier Filsaime, a five-star safety prospect from McKinney, Texas has only been committed to the Florida Gators since April.

That's a decent amount of time in the "real world" but on the recruiting trail, it's the blink of an eye. Six months also feels like a blip on the radar when a program like the Texas Longhorns comes calling, especially for a recruit from the state of Texas.

That's what happened earlier this week, though. Filsaime received an offer from head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns, and now it's being reported that the 6-foot-1, 180-pound high school senior is a massive target for Texas.

The Longhorns aren't the only ones trying to flip the Florida commit, though. According to Gerry Hamilton of On3, the back-to-back CFP national champion Georgia Bulldogs are also in the hunt.

“In the case of Filsaime, Texas isn’t the only school making a push,” Hamilton reported. “Georgia is also turning up the heat here a little this season. One source ultimately believes Filsaime will either play college ball in Florida or Texas, but didn’t want to discount the power of the Bulldogs in recruiting right now. Georgia is the team nationally, and everyone else is competing for second. Texas is expected by McKinney High late this week.”

Filsaime took official visits to Florida and Georgia over the summer, so the interest in UGA is clearly there. Texas just took a tough loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, but Sarkisian is clearly building a contender down in Austin. It will be interesting to see if he can get Filsaime on campus sometime this season.

What will make Filsaime's commitment to Florida interesting is the future of Gators head coach Billy Napier. He went 6-7 in his first season and has already accumulated two losses in year two.

With games against No. 1 Georgia, No. 22 LSU and No. 4 Florida State still remaining on the Gators' schedule, there is a world in which Napier finishes with five or more losses and could find himself with a short leash and a pink slip coming from the brass in Gainesville.

One would imagine, at least, that is the message the five-star will be getting from UGA, Texas and any other schools looking to flip his commitment.
