On Thursday, Texas kicker Bert Auburn announced his intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
Auburn will have one year of eligibility remaining. He initially joined the Longhorns roster as a walk-on in 2021 and competed with scholarship kicker Will Stone prior to the 2022 season. Auburn ultimately won the job and had a promising 2022 campaign, making 21-of-26 field goals and going 55-of-55 on extra points.
The Flower Mound (Texas) native had an even better season in 2023. He was once again perfect on extra points and broke the Texas and Big 12 record of 19 consecutive field goals made. Auburn's 29 field goals made in 2023 broke a single-season school record and his 143 points was the most ever for a Texas kicker.
After his record-breaking 2023 campaign, it's understandable why many expected a big season from Auburn in 2024. Unfortunately it ended up being his most inconsistent season yet.
Auburn concluded the 2024 season 16-of-25 on field goals and the majority of those crucial misses came in the final few games. After missing two field goals against Arizona State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal, Auburn was replaced by Stone in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Ohio State.
Although his time in Austin ended on a bad note, Auburn departs Texas as the all-time leader in field goals made (66) and total points scored (376).
Texas will likely look to the transfer portal to bring in a placekicker to compete with Stone ahead of the 2025 season.
