Texas Longhorns have made a big mark on this year's recruitment by putting together the number one recruiting class in 2025. But on Wednesday, Steve Sarkisian and co lost out on 6-foot-6 OT Aaron Thomas to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The 3-star recruit out of Mountain Pointe High School, Phoenix, AZ chose Ohio State over Texas , Texas A&M Aggies, Florida State Seminoles, and Washington Huskies.
Thomas will not be an immediate starter for the Buckeyes, but his long frame and athleticism give him a huge upside in the future. Given that Ohio State has proven to have a strong pipeline to the NFL for offensive linemen, it is beginning to look like the Longhorns will be fighting off the Buckeyes in this positional battle off the field.
Texas was the last team standing from the SEC in this year's playoff. But they went down to the mighty Ohio State Buckeyes. Now off the field as well, they are losing out on high-potential recruits.
Even though the Longhorns have set themselves up for success this year with their brilliant recruiting, other teams are catching up.
Alabama Crimson Tide won the battle when it came to 5-star RB Ezavier “EJ” Crowel who chose to join Kalen DeBoer over Texas. But it does not surprise as much as some of the other hits Longhorns have had to take since Alabama did what they were supposed to do by bagging a key in-state talent.
The Longhorns are showing vulnerability in-state as well.
Texas recruiters realized that the in-state competition was taking a toll on their recruitment. So this year, they expanded their focus to other states as well while still maintaining a stronghold on 5-star athletes coming out of Texas.
Ohio State did a good job of beating Texas to get Aaron Thomas but recruitment is a great equalizer. Just a day after Thomas' decision, another 4-star athlete, Mack Sutter announced his decision.
Sutter, a tight end out of Dunlap, Illinois, picked Alabama Crimson Tide over the Buckeyes. So while they are edging out the Longhorns for Texas talent, the Buckeyes could not hit on every front.
The recruitment roulette keeps on giving and taking from these premier college programs. Till the season starts, college football world will be kept alive by commitments and flips.
