As the Longhorns are just 10 days out from the first game of the season, all eyes in Austin, and many around the nation, are resting on the Longhorns’ new starting quarterback, Arch Manning.
After quarterback Quinn Ewers departed Texas after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins, it was certain that Manning would be the starter before spring camp even began. However, as he will be entering the 2025 season as a redshirt-sophomore, questions surrounding when he’d take his chance at the draft have already begun to circulate.
There may be two common beliefs among Longhorns fans about Manning and his draft potential: the first being that he’ll likely enter the draft and leave Austin if he has a successful year, and the other being that Texas will get lucky and he’ll return no matter what the outcome of the season is.
Well, the narrative is changing, and nobody knows what is going to happen thanks to Manning’s grandfather, Archie. Earlier this month, Archie spoke on Arch and the possibility of him entering the draft after this season.
“He isn’t going to do that,” Archie said. “He’ll be at Texas.”
This came as a surprise to many, as it was unexpected to learn of what the decision would be so soon. With no word from Arch on whether he had been thinking about the decision, or even having made one, it left some Texas fans relieved.
A common expectation has been that Arch would likely take his talents to a professional level once the season ends. However, the question about how Arch and Texas will perform during the season still remains.
The odds are likely that he will be great, and the likelihood of a successful Texas season is high, but the focus needs to be geared more towards success during the upcoming season, rather than focusing on his postseason decisions.
Although, it does seem as though Arch is not giving his time to any outside influence or drama. Arch spoke on Tuesday regarding what Archie had to say about his future at Texas.
“Yeah, I don’t know where he got that from,” Manning said. “He texted me and apologized about that. I’m really just taking it day by day right now.”
This might get the nerves a little unsteady for Texas fans yet again, but that’s not to say that he won’t still stay in Austin. Just like Arch, fans need to take the season day by day and let the season play out before worrying about his future.
Whether he stays or goes, the Longhorns will still be in good shape with good quarterback depth. Texas will still have Trey Owens and KJ Lacey on the roster, as well as the No. 1 QB in the class of 2026 incoming.
