Be better against the run.
Let’s start with something basic. Just be better against the run, and good things will happen. The team was 8-2 when allowing fewer than 170 rushing yards, and 0-3 when it didn’t. The new parts on the defensive front should change this up fast, so …
Lee Hunter, DT Sr.
What did the Red Raiders really need? A 6-4, 320-pound veteran all-star who can hold up on the inside. He made 131 tackles with five sacks and 22 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for UCF.
Top Transfer In: David Bailey, EDGE Sr.
One of the best transfers in the portal, the 6-3, 250-pound former Stanford Cardinal pass rusher was okay, making 14.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss over the last three seasons, but he has all of the NFL tools. The Red Raiders will turn him loose.
Top Transfer Out: Sterling Porcher, OG Sr.
The Texas Tech offense should be fine. It already has several players for the five spots, but it’s losing a 6-4, 315-pound interior blocker who would’ve locked down one of the guard gigs. He’ll now be a key cog up front for Vanderbilt.
at Utah, Sept. 20
It probably won’t receive the national attention it deserves, but this might have way more of an impact on the College Football Playoff chase than you think.
Utah should be back to being Utah. It has everything in place to not only win the Big 12, but do damage if it gets into the CFP. It would be a very, very big deal if Texas Tech takes down the Utes in the Big 12 opener.

The Big 12 will be even better from top to bottom, so the Red Raiders can’t take a week off in conference play.
The home game against Kansas is dangerous, and the trip to Houston is a concern. However, the Red Raiders get five Big 12 games against teams that didn’t go bowling last season, the non-conference schedule against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, and Oregon State is a soft, gentle breeze, and there’s no sure-thing loss on the slate.
But there will be some tough losses. At Utah, at Arizona State, at Kansas State - Texas Tech could be fantastic, and lose all three of those.
It’s Texas Tech, so it won’t be a ten-win regular season, but no one will run away and hide in the Big 12 title chase. The Red Raiders will be deep in the hunt for a spot in the championship game until the very end.
Set The Texas Tech Red Raiders Win Total At … 7.5
Likely Wins: Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, Oregon State
50/50 Games: at Arizona State, BYU, at Houston, Kansas, at Kansas State, Oklahoma State, UCF, at Utah, at West Virginia
Likely Losses: No sure-thing projected losses
