Two-way player Jermaine Bishop Jr is excited to join the Texas Longhorns as one of the most talented recruits coming out of high school. And he's basking in this excitement after posing in full Texas gear.
The Willis High School athlete took to Instagram on Sunday, sharing his first instance of donning the white and orange. He captioned the carousel with a stern message, "You’ll regret flipping them HORNS."
Bishop Jr has put a chip on his shoulder by adding the Jim Thorpe trophy to his photoshoot. The trophy that Jahdae Barron won last year after his exceptional season for Texas. But Bishop Jr has even bigger plans.
Playing consistent snaps at both cornerback and wide receiver, Bishop Jr is inspired by Travis Hunter's story and wishes to walk on the path the Heisman Winner created by playing two-way at the collegiate level.
The high school star presents one of the most interesting cases for any recruit in the current class. Standing at 5'11 with a lean frame, he's attracted a lot of doubts from scouts for being 'small' despite his gritty play on both sides of the ball.
But one can argue that his numbers tell a story that should not inspire much doubt. During his junior year, he recorded 83 receptions for 1,565 yards with 18 touchdowns. On the defensive side, he had 26 tackles, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles.
He even had a touchdown on a punt return!
Early in his recruiting process, he visited Austin, and that pretty much concluded the decision for him. His eyes were set on Texas even though he had offers from schools like the USC Trojans, Michigan Wolverines, and Florida Gators.
Bishop walks into his first college season with a lot of potential but even more doubts. He could also potentially play multiple positions, which brings another layer of intrigue.
It will be interesting to see how Steve Sarkisian and his staff bring out the best in this unique young athlete.
