The Tennessee Vols are dealing with some unexpected late offseason drama.
With less than a week to go before fall camp gets underway, it's unclear if sophomore defensive back Boo Carter, one of Tennessee's best overall players, will be on the team this season.
Carter's status is up in the air amid reports that he's missed various team activities this summer.
"Knox News has learned that Carter missed numerous team activities, and he was confronted by team leaders because of his absence," reported the Knoxville News Sentinel's Adam Sparks on Wednesday.
Sparks joined 97.7 ESPN The Zone on Thursday to discuss the Carter situation.
"What I know is that he missed a number of team activities in the summer recently -- team meetings, workouts, things that get pretty much 100 percent attendance at this point in the summer," explained Sparks. "But he didn't show up to them. He finally showed up eventually -- he had sort of cut off some contact. When he did show up, he was confronted by some of the team leaders, [like], 'Hey, dude, where have you been? Where are you at? You're expected to be here. Everybody else is here.'
"That got heated from my understanding. And then the relationships there with some of those team leaders is strained. And the communication with the team and (head coach) Josh Heupel is limited, is what I would say, at best. And so we're sort of in waiting mode now. Carter is on the roster, but it appears there's going to have to be some kind of a resolution between now and what would be next Tuesday's media day, maybe even Monday, which I think is report day. Practice starts next Wednesday. If he's still on the roster on Tuesday, then I guess we're good to go. But one way or another, Josh Heupel is going to have to address it, because pretty much everybody in Knoxville now knows that Boo Carter is not taking part in these team activities that everybody else is."

"Josh Heupel wants Boo Carter back," continued Sparks. "And the way he's going to get back is I think first, he's going to have to go to some teammates and sort of hash that. If he can smooth those things out, then convincing Josh Heupel to keep him on the team is not a hard decision. The teammates are going to have to approve this before the coach does."
There should be a resolution to the Carter drama in the coming days.
