Freshly-signed Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, hot off winning his first College Football Playoff championship with the University of Michigan Wolverines, is going to be on the hook to his now-former program, as Kevin Skiver of USA Today details in a new piece.
Per Skiver, Harbaugh owes Michigan a $1.5 million buyout for breaking his contract with the program, defecting to the Bolts and returning to the NFL. The last time around at the pro level, he coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14, guiding the club to a Super Bowl appearance in 2013 against his brother John's Baltimore Ravens.
The Chargers, not Harbaugh, seem poised to pay that sticker tag, per Skiver.
"Harbaugh reportedly was negotiating ways to keep his buyout low with Michigan as the Wolverines tried to keep their coach. But ultimately, he ended up rendering the conversation moot by joining the Chargers."
