The Oklahoma Sooners are in desperate need of a turnaround in 2025, with Brent Venables seemingly on the hot seat following a 6-7 2024 season. A lot went wrong for them in 2024, but they have a lot going right for them this offseason ahead of such a crucial 2025 season.
They are going to be relying on a bevy of new talent to fill the void left on their roster by numerous departures in the offseason. Who are their most important players they will turn to to carry the team in such a pivotal year?
Without a doubt, Mateer is the most important player on the Sooners' roster next season. The hopes of the team rest on his arm and ability to operate the offense.
Mateer had a superb 2024 season, but it's a significant jump going from playing in the Pac-2 to the SEC.
His ability as a runner add a different dimension to the Sooners' offense, which makes him a deadly dual-threat player when combined with his prowess as a passer. If he takes that next step as a processor and refines his mechanics, Mateer can be the Sooners' best option under center of the last few years.
I could make several other choices here, but nobody else comes close in my mind to the impact that Deion Burks can bring if he's fully healthy this season. The Sooners retooled their wide receiver room, but let's not kid ourselves about who the top dog is in this unit.
If Burks is ready to go, the passing offense will flow through him. He can be a game-breaking playmaker that completely shifts the look the wide receiver room brings in any game.
The Oklahoma Sooners built an elite defense last season, something that would be talked about more if the offense wasn't a complete letdown. If they want to continue that next season, cornerback Eli Bowen is going to have to pick up where he left off shutting down opposing receivers left and right.
Bowen was one of the best cornerbacks in the country last season, but teams are going to be aware of him this season. If he can continue his high level of play, the rest of the Sooners' defense reaps the benefits.
