The Texas Longhorns RB room has taken two massive hits in the past couple of weeks. RB CJ Baxter and Christian Clark suffered season-ending injuries during fall camp leaving the Longhorns with a thin RB room. Here are three reasons why Texas will still be okay despite the losses.
The Longhorns will have one of the best passing games in the country this season. Texas will have to lean on this even more as they look to replace loss production in the running game. QB Quinn Ewers will have a lot of weapons to work with as the Longhorns added transfer WRs Isaiah Bond, Silas Bolden, and Matthew Golden. Expect HC Steve Sarkisian to utilize this talent to help take some pressure off the RB group.
While Texas only has three scholarship RBs they are still an extremely talented backfield. RB Jaydon Blue will be the likely starter proving his ability on the ground and through the air in 2023. Blue accounted for 398 rushing yards and 125 receiving yards. Running backs Tre Wisner and Jerrick Gibson, who will be joining Blue, have earned high praise from Sarkisian for their improvement this off-season.
The Longhorns’ running back corps will benefit from operating behind one of the top offensive lines in the nation, which returns four of its five starters from last season. This continuity is crucial for establishing an effective ground game, no matter who takes the handoff. Texas ranked 23rd in rushing yards per game in 2023, and with a formidable O-line paving the way, they’re poised to match, if not exceed, that production in 2024. Expect the Longhorns’ run game to be a consistent and dominant force throughout the season.
