Top SEC Coach Snubs Arch Manning While Naming the Best Returning QB

There's no doubt a lot of pressure facing the Texas Longhorns heading into 2025, as it will be the first year that quarterback Arch Manning serves as the team's full-time starter after sitting behind Quinn Ewers for two seasons.

In a video posted to the "ESPN College Football" YouTube channel, a brief conversation broke out between analysts Reece Davis and Pete Thamel on whether or not he was the best returning quarterback in college football.

However, also involved in the discussion was LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly, who revealed that he believes his quarterback, Garrett Nussmeir, deserves that title instead.

“All I’m saying is, Nussmeier has seen it," Kelly said. "He knows what he’s going to get. There’s a confidence that he’ll bring each and every game through experience, maybe even through some scar tissue, that’s going to allow him to be, I believe, the best quarterback... I can see the assessment of Manning, he’s an outstanding player. But I’ll take the guy that’s been in the SEC and seen what it looks like.”

Manning has been solid in his limited playing time, appearing in 12 games, completing 63-of-95 passes for 969 yards, nine touchdowns, two interceptions and a 178 passing efficiency rating while also having 115 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

However, that's extremely hard to compare against Nussmeier, who last season alone completed 337-of-525 passes for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 142.7 passing efficiency rating.

However, there's certainly no doubt that each is extremely talented, as ESPN's Mark Schlabach has Manning and Nussmeier in an article naming some "Way-too-early 2025 Heisman Trophy contenders."

What could help decide this debate by the end of the year, though, is how well their teams perform, because per ESPN BET, Texas is tied for the best odds (+500) to win the national championship, while LSU has the ninth best (+1800).
