Transfer QB Predicted to Start Over 5-Star Recruit Bryce Underwood At Michigan

The future of Michigan football landed when former five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood committed to the Wolverines in November.

While all the hype and scouting reports will likely hold true for Underwood in the long term, head coach Sherrone Moore has to worry about the short term.

On3's Ari Wasserman believes that because Moore hit the transfer portal this winter to bring in Fresno State signal-caller Mikey Keene, a redshirt senior who passed for 2,892 yards, 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, this fall's starting job belongs to the veteran, not the true freshman.

The Wolverines finished 2024 on the upswing with three straight wins to close out the year, including upsets over Ohio State and Alabama.

That forward momentum, especially from the win over their rival Buckeyes, only lasts a limited time in a highly competitive Big Ten.

Even if Keene is the penciled-in starter to begin the season, Underwood's development will be tested early.

Given Underwood's size, arm, and ability to extend the play, there are player comps for the freshman that put him in the same category as Texas legend Vince Young.

So, although Keene has 5,868 passing yards and 39 career starts, there will be early season blowouts and play packages that will feature Underwood and likely give him opportunities to see the field sooner rather than later.
