In today's day and age of college football, more and more teams are going to the 'two back system' and aren't relying on one singular running back taking the bulk of the carries. You'll always have exceptions; last season Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty carried the ball 374 times for 2,601 yards and had 29 rushing touchdowns. However, that is more of an anomaly than it was a decade ago.
Notre Dame has rotated their running backs on a consistent basis since 2020 when they had Kyren Williams and Chris Tyree. In recent years, the share of carries has become more even across the board. Last season, running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price burst onto the college football scene in emphatic fashion, and they did it splitting the load.
In 2024, Love and Price combined for 283 carries, 1,871 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. Their performance a year ago landed them on Lindy's Sports Top 25 running backs list ahead of the 2025 season.
Notre Dame and Penn State are the only two schools who have two running backs named on this list, which isn't a surprise considering most outlets consider both programs to have the No. 1 and No. 2 running back rooms in the country. Love was listed as the No. 1 overall back on this list while Price was ranked as the No. 16 back on this list. Price has an argument to be listed higher on these rankings; Kansas State running back Dylan Edwards, a former Notre Dame commit, had 46 less carries, 200 less yards and two less touchdowns than Price in 2024 but is ranked two spots higher.
His lower ranking on this list is dictated by his supposed 'lack of production' compared to the Penn State running back duo and the Ohio State running back duo from a season ago. Kaytron Allen, Nicholas Singleton, Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson went for over 1,00 yards each. However, if you gave Price the same amount of carries as Love (163), he would have also been an 1,000 yard rusher given his average yards per carry (6.2) from 2024.
Price is poised for another big season of production on the ground, especially with the departure of quarterback Riley Leonard who accounted for 184 carries, 906 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. The majority of Leonard's carries will be split amongst Love and Price but some will filter down to sophomores Aneyas Williams and Kedren Young given the situation.
The duo of Love and Price is set to be another dominant force in college football in 2025. With the Irish breaking in a young and inexperienced quarterback this fall, they will need their two stud running backs to carry a heavier workload in the first quarter of the season, something that Love and Price are more than capable of handling.
