A shocking stabbing incident at the UAB Blazers football program has left two players with injuries and one player taken into custody and charged with multiple felonies.

At around 12:40 p.m. CT, UAB Blazers offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with attempt to murder. Two UAB players suffered multiple stab wounds, but UAB said in a statement that the injuries the unnamed players suffered are not believed to be life threatening. The school said that the suspect is in custody and that there is no active threat to anyone on the campus.

“UAB Police and Public Safety is investigating an assault that took place this morning at the Football Operations Center," the UAB statement said, via AL.com. "Injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The suspect is in custody, and there is no threat to campus."

The incident took place a mere two hours before the team was scheduled to play against South Florida at Protective Stadium. In spite of the violent nature of the incident, the team has elected to play the game anyway.

"We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition," the statement said, via ESPN. "Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody and an investigation is taking place.

"The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”

UAB in 2025

The 2025 college football season has been a rough one for UAB football to say the least. They started 2-4 under now-former head coach Trent Dilfer, before delivering a stunning upset over a ranked Memphis Tigers team in their first game with interim head coach Alex Mortensen.

But in the weeks since that win, the Blazers have lost three straight and will miss out on bowl eligibility for the third year in a row.
