The Dan Mullen era at UNLV got off to an underwhelming start. Despite coming in as heavy favorites, the Rebels looked disjointed on both sides of the ball and never found the dominance expected under their new head coach. Offensively, there were glimpses of creativity in Mullen’s system, but poor execution and a lack of consistency stalled drives. Defensively, the Rebels struggled with communication breakdowns and gave up key plays that kept their opponent hanging around.
For a fan base hoping for a fresh start and a statement win. The debut felt more like a reminder of how much work still lies ahead. Instead of a spark, Mullen’s first game served as a reality check that rebuilding UNLV into a contender will take time. With the hopes of maintaining former Head Coach Barry Odom’s momentum. It could be a work in progress as two different cultures are in play to be able to keep UNLV as a rising program in the nation.

UNLV’s defense was overwhelmed in its opener, surrendering a staggering 555 total yards to Idaho State. The Rebels had no answer for the Bengals’ offensive tempo, repeatedly giving up big plays through the air and on the ground. Missed tackles, blown coverages, and poor gap discipline highlighted a unit that looked unprepared and out of sync. For a team that entered as a 30-point favorite, the defensive collapse was the most glaring factor in an underwhelming debut to the Dan Mullen era.
UNLV’s offense had more success than the defense. With the two-quarterback system only adds to the imbalance overall. Dan Mullen is a creative playmaker but when he tries to get too cute is when he gets in trouble. Ideally you’d like to see a QB1 be established soon. Having alternating quarterbacks is not recipe for success.
Dan Mullen sent a strong message to his team about accountability and unity. He stressed that football is a collective effort, not a stage for individual stats or highlight plays, saying.
“If all you care about is your individual performance, you need to go play tennis.”
The remark underscored his frustration with the lack of cohesion on both sides of the ball and highlighted his demand for players to buy into the team-first mentality.
A win is way better than a loss. So that’s something that can be built on. But with a way more dangerous opponent lurking for game number two in UCLA. Dan Mullen is going to have to figure out how to tune up the defense and also fine-tune the offense as well. So he has two weeks to get that in order. But UNLV fans should understand that this season could very well be a work in progress as all of the first year players are getting are still trying to gel together.
