Urban Meyer Unleashes Truth on Colorado Culture Under Deion Sanders
Urban Meyer. Syndication Detroit Free Press

Deion Sanders' arrival in Colorado before the 2023 college football season completely shifted the landscape of college football.

A program that was often overlooked or ignored has since become one of the biggest storylines in the sport, with stars like Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter making plays all over the field and leading them to a 9-4 record in 2024.

However, due to the attention that the Sanders family attracts and the frequent spotlight on every aspect of the program, there has been a belief amongst opposing fan bases that there is a culture problem in Boulder. What Colorado fans view as a new energy around a program that finished 1-11 in 2022, others see as a program that is too flashy and loud.

The latter sentiment being one that legendary college football coach at Florida and Ohio State, Urban Meyer, denounced on a recent episode of "The Triple Option."

"I went and watched them practice," Meyer said. "As uncomfortable sometimes as I was when I see the watches and I see the cars and all the flash, that's just not me. But that's when I saw what went on behind the scenes, I agree with you. There's a culture there. He is tough on them, man. He is demanding of that team, and that's what blew my mind."

That culture led to Colorado's first nine-win season since 2016, its first bowl game appearance since 2020 and also marked the first time the Buffs finished ranked in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Although "Coach Prime" will have a tall task of replacing 50% of the team's production from a year ago, the culture he has clearly instilled may be the difference in Colorado sustaining its success.
