Urban Meyer's Stance on Firing Billy Napier Will Upset Florida Fans

During his stint as the Florida Gators head coach from 2005-10, legendary college football coach Urban Meyer led the program to a 65-15 record, while also winning two of the program's three national championships. However, after his departure after the 2010 season the Gators have since had four different head coaches.

The program fired Will Muschamp after three seasons on the job in 2013, mutually parted ways with Jim McElwain after three seasons in 2017 and also fired Dan Mullen after four years in 2021.

With the Gators sitting at a 1-3 record through four games this season, in what is his fourth year on the job, Billy Napier's days are viewed as numbered in Gainesville by fans and media members.

However, when Meyer was asked about it on a recent episode of the "Triple Option" podcast, he didn't share that same sentiment.

Meyer is of the belief that firing Napier would simply cost too much at this time.

"Billy Napier is caught in a firestorm. How’s it end?” Meyer said. “Again, I don’t see them making the change right now with $21 million (owed to Napier). And that’s going on pretty well-documented conversation with people throughout the country that there’s, once again, where does it go? Where you getting that money from?

“Because the money’s already distributed," Meyer said. "The money’s accounted for.”

While Napier coached his way off of the hot seat a year ago to finish 8-5, ESPN's FPI ranks them as having the No. 2 schedule in terms of remaining difficulty. They currently have six ranked teams on the docket, with all six currently ranking within the top 15.

The Gators are on a bye this week, but will return to action on Oct. 11 against the No. 10 Texas Longhorns.
