The University of Utah has a lot of holes to fill during this portal season, and the Utes just picked up its 10th commitment from a Big Ten program.
The Utes are known for having a great offensive line, and Spencer Fano is returning to anchor that position group for the 2025 season.
Utah needed more, so Kyle Whittingham and his staff went portal shopping and are bringing in former USC Trojan offensive tackle Kalolo Ta'aga to build depth and develop him into a key contributor.

Ta'aga is definitely going to be a project for the Utes, but it could be worth it based on the history of Utah's ability to create a great player with perceived lesser talent. He is a former three-star recruit out of high school from Archbishop Riordan High School in East Palo Alto, California. However, Ta’aga never saw action on the football field with USC.
A late addition to the sport, Ta’aga did not start playing high school football until the fall of 2023, but he does bring athleticism as he did play basketball, where he picked up honors in hoops.
The potential is there for Ta’aga to become a contributor as he stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs 315 pounds. There is still a need to learn what it takes to be an offensive lineman at the power conference level.
During his recruitment it did come down to Utah and USC. Ta’aga’s final choices were among Utah, Cal, and Arizona during the portal period.
Ta’aga’s time playing basketball should prove to be beneficial with great footwork that is required on the hardwood and that should translate well to being an offensive lineman.
This could be a great addition for the Utes as this staff is well-known for developing talent into elite stars.
