You’d like to have missed Miami - and Florida State if its back up to speed - but overall this isn’t horrible. Of course you don’t want to face Clemson, and if SMU does all that again, it’s a huge break to get it off the schedule. Boston College, North Carolina, Pitt, and Syracuse are all landmines the Hokies get to sidestep.
The Good: There’s only one road game before October 11th and two until mid-November.
Granted, the opener against South Carolina is in Atlanta, but there are only four true road games and there’s a week off before dealing with Florida State. To take this even further, the Hokies only leave Virginia once - that trip to Tallahassee - after October 11th.
The Bad: There’s a problem if Florida State and NC State are strong again.
If those two are back to their normal form after blah 2024s, those two road games might be sure-thing losses. Georgia Tech on the road is an issue, and Virginia - even if Virginia Tech owns that rivalry - is on the road.
Vanderbilt isn’t a sure-thing at home, neither is Louisville or Miami, and throw that opener against South Carolina into the mix and there aren’t enough games in the Lean Win category.
Best Case Scenario: Even with all of the personnel changes and all the turnover, the Hokies come out roaring against South Carolina to kick things off. They follow that up with a win over Vanderbilt, and it’s a 4-0 start before going to NC State.
They split the road games against the Wolfpack and Georgia Tech, pull off a home win over Louisville, and the team is already bowl eligible going into the finishing kick. And, of course, there’s a win over Virginia.
Worst Case Scenario: Virginia Tech can’t do jack-squat away from Blacksburg.
It loses to South Carolina, can’t get past Diego Pavia and Vanderbilt and that’s pretty much the ball game. It loses three of the four road games, can’t handle Louisville, and the team is basically playing the last two weeks for the joy of the game - and that leaves the building with a loss to Virginia.
Virginia Tech Season Prediction: (Feb 12) It’ll be easy for everyone for everyone to go all doom and gloom for a team with so much work to do, but it should find a way to grind its way to six wins and a bowl game. It might take a win at Virginia to do it - don’t just assume wins over improved Wake Forest and Cal teams, by the way - but the Hokies should get there.
The Season Prediction will be updated several times this offseason
