Hokies athletics director Whit Babcock said the following in a release.
"While it is never easy to make a change, I believe in order for our football program to attain the type of sustained success that is expected at Virginia Tech, the time was right for new leadership of our football program."
Andy Bitter of The Athletic tweeted that J.C. Price will be taking over as the team's interim coach.
Fuente began his head-coaching career with four seasons at the University of Memphis from 2012 through 2015, where he went 26-23 and won the 2014 Miami Beach Bowl. The Tigers went 10-3 in 2014 and Fuente was named the AAC Coach of the Year that season.
During his run at Memphis, Fuente compiled 43-31 mark and 1-3 record in bowl games. Fuente's most successful season with the Tigers came in 2016, when the team went 10-4 and won the Belk Bowl.
Fuente was named the 2016 ACC Coach of the Year following that season.
