Virginia Tech LB Isi Etute charged with second-degree murder

ESPN's David M. Hale and Ben Kercheval of CBS Sports explained Wednesday that Virginia Tech Hokies freshman linebacker Isi Etute has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the death of a Blacksburg male resident.

The Blacksburg Police Department says it had officers respond to a call for a welfare check Tuesday night, when they found a 40-year-old victim said to be an acquaintance of Etute. Investigators quickly ruled the death a homicide, named Etute a person of interest, and charged him with second-degree murder.

The Blacksburg PD added Etute is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail and that "there is no reason to believe there is any ongoing threat to the public."

In its official statement, Virginia Tech said:

"In the case of a felony arrest, the university has the authority to place a student on immediate interim suspension. In addition, Etute, a member of the football team, has been suspended from the team, effective immediately.

"Blacksburg Police continues to lead this ongoing investigation, and the university will assist law enforcement agencies working the case in any way it can."

Etute, 18, was an early enrollee and had participated in spring football practices.
