Vols DB Boo Carter had a tough moment during win against UAB, but he still received a big shoutout from Josh Heupel after the game

It's been a trying few months for Tennessee Vols defensive back Boo Carter.

Carter, a dynamic defensive back from Chattanooga, missed some team activities over the summer, which put his status with the Vols in question.

The former four-star recruit had to work his way back into the good graces of his teammates during fall camp. Carter didn't start the Vols' season-opener against Syracuse, but he's been eased back into a key role on defense and special teams.

Carter's had some tough moments this season. He's muffed a couple of punts, including one against UAB on Saturday, and he's had some defensive lapses.

The dynamic safety, though, has also had some great moments, such as forcing two fumbles on Saturday in Tennessee's win against UAB (one of which the Vols returned for a touchdown).

Carter's muffed punt against UAB ended up being an afterthought because of the sophomore's big defensive game.

Carter, who led the Vols' defense with nine tackles and three tackles for loss, forced the fumble that defensive back Kaleb Beasley returned for a touchdown.

Vols head coach Josh Heupel presented Carter with a game ball for his standout performance against UAB. Carter was one of several players to receive a game ball.

Carter has been a polarizing figure among Tennessee fans, but there's no doubt the Vols are a better team with a locked-in Carter on the field.

Tennessee needs a healthy and dialed-in Carter on the field for this team to reach its ultimate goal of winning a natty.
