The offense wasn’t its normal Wake Forest self.
It wasn’t explosive, the ground game didn’t help, and even with the 371 yards per game overall, it wasn’t enough to keep the pace.
In comes the faster Jake Dickert offense that should crank things up in a hurry. Offensive coordinator Rob Ezell enters from South Alabama after a monster year running the nation’s 18th-best offense that averaged over 34 points per game.

Wake Forest Defense Breakdown
Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season
- Step One to get the Wake Forest offense going again - the line has to be much, much better. Last year’s front five was awful in pass protection, and the ground attack averaged just 3.5 yards per carry.
Guard George Sell is still around, but the rest of the line is all about the portal. This is where the head coach comes in, bringing in star tackle Fa’alili Fa’amoe (Washington State), one of the best available tackles in the cycle, and likely starting center.
Devin Kylany (Washington State). Jacob Dennison (Ohio) is a nice tackle-get who needs to fit in somewhere. They all have a great back to work for in …
- Demond Claiborne is still around following a 1,049-yard, 11-touchdown season. He proved he could catch, too, and he’ll be used even more as a receiver after making 23 grabs. Tate Carney is a strong No. 2, running for 339 yards and six scores.
- The quarterback situation is everything to this attack. Dickert had John Mateer to handle things at Washington State, and before that Cam Ward. In his first year with the Demon Deacons, it's between Robby Ashford (South Carolina) and Deshawn Purdie (Charlotte), and either one can produce. Ashford brings far more rushing production.
- The receiving corps is getting help from Washington State, too, with Carlos Hernandez a good slot target and Chris Barnes good enough in the system to go somewhere. Micah Mays is the main returning Demon Deacon, he’ll work on the outside, and Sterling Berkhalter (Cincinnati) and Sawyer Racanelli (Montana) are big inside receivers who’ll instantly fit.
