After an okay first season under head coach Jedd Fisch, Washington has the potential to crank up a hot start. But there's improving to do, and this has to be the game that starts it all off.

The talent is there, but it's an interesting mix of upperclassmen transfers and true freshmen prospects who all have to mesh in the first few weeks.

There's this, UC Davis next, and then the rivalry Apple Cup date against Washington State before dealing with Ohio State in the Big Ten opener.

Colorado State hasn't won a season opener since beating Oregon State in 2017, and with Northern Colorado and UTSA up next, it has a shot at doing something special early if it pulls off the upset.

Why Colorado State Will Win

Boise State is the star of the Mountain West, but Colorado State should be deep in the mix for the conference title. It starts on the offensive line, with the starting five to be fine at giving veteran quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi just enough time to operate.

On the flip side, the Washington offensive line wasn't good enough last season. It was too inconsistent and couldn't generate a push for the ground attack. New Ram defensive coordinator Tyson Summers knows how to dial up the pressure. However ...

Why Washington Will Win

Colorado State's defensive back seven is all but starting over. The linebacking corps has a nice mix, but it needs the transfers to be great early on.

No, the Husky O line wasn't quite as strong as it should've been, but running back Jonah Coleman had a strong year, quarterback Demond Williams is a lightning-fast weapon, and there should be plenty of gouging runs.

Washington should come up with a nice mix of workmanlike and explosive to get by.

Colorado State won't go away easily, and it'll start to find its footing midway through the game to keep it interesting, but Williams will overcome a few first game mistakes to do something amazing to help the Huskies pull away.
