The Indianapolis Colts were expected to draft a quarterback with the fourth overall selection, but there were signs pointing toward Kentucky’s Will Levis.
Instead, the organization turned heads when it picked Florida’s Anthony Richardson, just weeks after he put on a show at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

“I’m at a loss for words,” Richardson’s mom LaShawnda said while fighting back tears during the ESPN broadcast. “I’m so proud of my son.”
“This is very special to me,” said Corey Carter, Richardson’s brother, with whom he wore a matching suit. “Especially because I look up to him and I always wanted to be like him.”
The moment was a culmination of a true family group effort. Richardson juggled looking after his little brother, school responsibilities and football and basketball practices. His mom worked three jobs while also attending school.
Although he started just 12 games at Florida, scouts during the evaluating process have raved about Richardson’s size, athleticism and ceiling as a starting NFL quarterback. He threw for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2022, while also rushing for 654 yards and nine additional touchdowns.
Should he rising to starting duties immediately upcoming, the 20-year-old Richardson would become Indianapolis’ eighth different starting quarterback since Andrew Luck retired in 2019.
