Watch: Michigan takes early lead vs. USC with long TD run

Michigan is defending the Big House early.

In a massive top-25 showdown against Associated Press No. 11 USC (2-0), No. 18 Michigan (2-1) struck first when running back Kalel Mullings took a first-quarter handoff 53 yards for a touchdown.

Mullings ran through the middle of USC's defense on the first-down carry.

The fifth-year senior was originally recruited as a linebacker but transitioned to primarily a running back in 2023.

He led Michigan in rushing (270 yards) through its first three games this season.

With tight end Colston Loveland, the most reliable threat in the passing game, unavailable due to injury and quarterback Alex Orji making his first start, Mullings is arguably Michigan's most important offensive player.

USC is playing in its first conference game as a Big Ten member after previously playing in the Pac-12. Early, Michigan gave the program a rude welcome.

After one quarter, Michigan led 7-0. The Wolverines outgained the Trojans 96-3.
