Watch: Washington surprises kicker with scholarship after hitting game-winning FG vs. Washington State

Washington kicker Grady Gross had a day to remember helping the Huskies improve to 12-0 after a 24-21 Apple Cup victory over Washington State.

As the fourth-quarter clock hit zero on Saturday, Gross booted a game-winning 42-yard field goal, breaking a 21-21 tie. However, after his heroics, Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer announced in an incredibly heartfelt moment that Gross had earned himself a scholarship.

Gross created a memory he won't soon forget, but how Washington ended up in position for the walk-off field goal will forever leave a bitter taste in the mouths of Washington State fans.

With the Huskies driving late near midfield, officials flagged Washington State defensive lineman Kyle Thornton for a questionable, at best, rough the passer penalty.

Instead of facing second down a step inside Washington State territory with under a minute to go, the penalty moved Washington to the 27-yard line.

Five plays later, Gross kicked one through the uprights before being carried off the field.
