Now that the Longhorns are 2-1 on the season after a sloppy 27-10 win over UTEP, yet another game marked by struggles from quarterback Arch Manning, it’s time for them to receive their weekly report card.
The offense and the defense both receive a numerical grade, which will be rounded out for an overall letter grade.
The Longhorns’ offense was only able to score 27 points against a not-so-good UTEP team, and the inability to score even four touchdowns throughout the entire game is more than a little concerning.
Manning still struggled plenty, throwing 10 straight incompletions in the second quarter, and finishing the game having only completed 11-of-25 passes for 114 yards and an interception.
After two quarters’ worth of struggles, but success with Manning’s legs, Sarkisian implemented more quarterback-designed runs in the second half of the game, which did help Texas move the ball down the field a little better in the second half.
The offense as a whole still seemed to lack chemistry and smoothness. To make matters worse, fans booed the team off the field at halftime, which should send a message about just how displeased the fans are.
It would have been nice to see the Longhorns get their first shutout of the season, considering this would likely be the best and most likely time to be able to do it, but that didn’t happen.
The defense still played very well and is still looking like a defense for a championship-caliber team. The defense was able to acquire two interceptions and two sacks. More sacks would be nice, but that’s not too big of a concern right now.
Freshman cornerback Graceson Littleton is continuing to stand out and look like he may be one of the best defensive freshmen in the country, as he’s now sitting at six total tackles, a pass deflection, an interception, and a great performance against Ohio State.
The defensive line is beginning to improve and look better as time goes on, but as of now, that is probably the area that is most in need of improvement. It would definitely be nice to see more pressure and sacks further on down the road.
The defense is keeping this ship afloat. The offense will need to imrpove as it looks like it would struggle to win six games, whereas the defense looks like it belongs to a top-5 team.
