West Virginia Just Lost Its Biggest Offensive Weapon

The West Virginia Mountaineers were dealt a major early-season blow as star running back Jahiem White has been ruled out for the remainder of the year following a recent MRI evaluation. White exited West Virginia’s season opener against Ohio with what appeared to be a serious injury just after scoring on a 32-yard touchdown run. He was carted off and did not return to the game, and sources now confirm the injury will keep him sidelined for the rest of 2025.

White had delivered a breakout performance earlier in the contest, leading the Mountaineers in rushing and standing out as a pivotal offensive spark. His absence leaves West Virginia without its most explosive ball-carrier and risks a sharp decline in the ground game just as Big 12 play looms.

The running back room now faces immense pressure to fill that void. Clay Ash , Cyncir Bowers, and Tye Edwards are expected to rotate in carries, but none possess the same explosiveness or playmaking instincts that White brings. Without him, opponents will likely feel less urgency to stack the box and may shift attention to containing the passing game.

For Mountaineers fans, the news is crushing. White was not only the leading back but a home-grown producer whose dynamic style fit perfectly in Rich Rodriguez’s offense. His absence removes both an X-factor and a morale builder from the field.

The outlook now depends on adaptation at multiple levels. Offensive line cohesion, quarterback mobility, and opportunistic play-calling must compensate for lost yardage and momentum. Rodriguez and his staff will lean on creative packages and quicker passes to mitigate the absence. Special teams and defense must also compensate by turning turnovers into scoring opportunities.

As disappointing as this prognosis is, WVU has a chance to rally. With a focused attitude and collaborative effort, the Mountaineers could rebuild identity and resiliency under pressure. Still, the season just got harder without one of its most dynamic playmakers.
