West Virginia offensive lineman Ayden Bussell has made the difficult decision to step away from the football program to focus on a private health matter. The announcement was confirmed by his agent, Kevin White, CEO of Prosper Sports.
“At this time, Ayden’s health and long-term well-being are our top priorities,” White said. “He has the full support of his family, our agency, and the people who care about him most.” He added, “Ayden is thankful for the understanding and support he has received during this difficult time.”
Bussell, a redshirt sophomore and former Tennessee transfer, logged 62 snaps over three games in 2024 before transferring to West Virginia in May. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound offensive lineman had been expected to compete for a starting role this fall with the Mountaineers.
Head coach Rich Rodriguez and WVU’s staff have respected the details of Bussell’s private situation. Sources do not elaborate on the exact nature of the health issue. Team officials and family have asked for privacy while the focus remains on recovery.
In making this move before fall camp intensifies, Bussell illustrates the balance athletes face when mental and physical health conflict with competitive opportunity. West Virginia’s offensive line depth will now be tested entering a season of transition and new leadership under Rodriguez.
Mountaineer fans and teammates have rallied in social media comments, offering support and encouraging patience. While Bussell’s return timeline isn’t clear, leadership emphasizes that his well-being comes first.
