Who's up next for Nebraska after former starting QB transfers?

QB Casey Thompson, who started 10 games for Nebraska last season, will play for Florida Atlantic University in 2023, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel

Thompson, who went to FAU for an official visit Tuesday, is reuniting with his former head coach at Texas, Tom Herman. He'll have immediate eligibility as a graduate transfer for his sixth and final collegiate season.

Thompson is the third Husker quarterback to enter the transfer portal, joining Logan Smothers and Richard Torres. The move leaves four QBs on Nebraska's roster: Heinrich Haarberg, Chubba Purdy, Jeff Sims and Jack Woche.

Sims, a transfer from Georgia Tech, appears to have the inside track on the starter's role. He had a successful spring game (8-for-10, 139 yards), prompting praise from head coach Matt Rhule on the Huskers Radio Network earlier this week.

In the spring, Sims struggled with accuracy and decision-making before improving. Rhule, however, isn’t handing over the keys to the offense yet. Haarberg, a sophomore, may still be in the running to start.

“After my first meeting with coach Rhule and [OC Marcus Satterfield], I got a sense that this is a place, with this staff, where I could thrive," Haarberg said, per Husker247. "I really had a renewed sense of energy."

Haarberg, however, wasn't impressive in the spring game, going 2-for-9.

Rhule has yet to announce who his starting quarterback will be in Week 1 at Minnesota. Whoever it is has a big job. Nebraska is coming off a 4-8 season and hasn't had a winning season since 2016.
