Why Iowa State HC Matt Campbell may have fallen from radar of Wisconsin, Nebraska

Weeks ago, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell reportedly landed atop the shortlists for head coaching vacancies at Nebraska and Wisconsin.

However, in the past three weeks, Campbell apparently has fallen out of consideration for either job, per Fox Sports analyst Bruce Feldman.

Why did Campbell go from atop the shortlist of candidates to out of consideration?

Since Nebraska fired Scott Frost on Sept. 11, Campbell and Iowa State have won one game, a 43-10 drubbing of Ohio, and lost four consecutive games by a combined 14 points.

Missed field goals cost the Cyclones in the losses to Texas and Kansas. Against the Jayhawks, Iowa State kicker Jace Gilbert went 1-for-4 on field goal attempts as the Cyclones lost by three points. Against Texas, Gilbert missed his lone attempt in another three-point loss.

The Cyclones' special teams struggles and their notable lack of a special teams coordinator on staff sound all too similar to Nebraska fans, who suffered through their own share of special teams issues under Frost.

Against Baylor and Kansas State, the Cyclones' offense, which ranks 87th in total offense, had only 66 rushing yards against the Bears and 78 against the Wildcats.

At Wisconsin, offensive inconsistency and a lack of explosiveness under Paul Chryst led to a slow erosion of the Badgers as a Big Ten contender. That's two of the reasons why the administration fired Chryst.

For now, Campbell’s window to move on and up from Iowa State appears shut for the 2022 coaching carousel.
