Winners and losers for Week 1 of the college football season

Quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Drew Allar made the most out of their spotlight while TCU, Baylor and Boston College are still trying to find the light switch. Here are the winners and losers of Saturday's college football action.

WINNERS

Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders and DB/WR Travis Hunter: The Buffaloes star duo shined in Colorado's upset 45-42 win over Associated Press preseason No. 17 TCU.

Sanders was 38-of-47 for 510 yards, a single-game Colorado record, and four touchdowns. Hunter had 11 receptions, 119 yards, three tackles and a remarkable interception in 110 total snaps.

The performances quieted doubters who for some reason questioned the legitimacy of their success in the SWAC at Jackson State.

"They let names, and they let Power 5 and stuff get to their head. I think this the highest passing yards I had in my life. I was just at HBCU, you know what I mean," Sanders said following the game.

LOSER

TCU's College Football Playoff repeat hopes Lost in the commotion of TCU's 45-42 loss is that last year's CFP finalist may have had its playoff hopes dashed. The Horned Frogs have given up 110 points and allowed 1,154 yards in its past two games dating back to last season's 65-7 championship game loss to Georgia.

TCU likely needs to be perfect the rest of the way to make it back to the CFP and its pass defense has too many holes for the Horned Frogs to run the table.

WINNER

Penn State QB Drew Allar: Allar's first touchdown as a Nittany Lion was one of the best throws of the day.

Allar stepped up in the pocket to avoid the West Virginia pass rush before delivering an on-target throw on the run to wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith for a 72-yard touchdown. The Nittany Lions defeated the Mountaineers, 38-15.

No. 7 Penn State's gotten off to hot starts the past two seasons before being exposed by Michigan and Ohio State. Allar's performance on Saturday (21-of-29 for 325 yards and three touchdowns) is a sign this year might be different.

LOSER

NCAA: Drake Maye had some good moments in No. 21 North Carolina's 31-17 win over South Carolina. He finished the game 24-of-32 for 269 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Know what would have made him even better? Having wide receiver Tez Walker eligible. The NCAA is getting Walker's case wrong every minute he isn't on the field.

WINNER

Circus catches: Fresno State wide receiver Tre Watson had a contender for catch of the year in a 39-35 win against Purdue when he extended for the grab and a hit jarred the ball loose. Before the ball hit the ground, Watson regained possession.

Texas State wide receiver Joe Hobert one-upped him with an Odell Beckham-esque catch on the sideline in a shocking 42-31 win over Baylor, a 26.5-point pre-game favorite.

LOSER

Boston College's math: Boston College paid Northern Illinois $1.1M and all it got was a lousy 27-24 overtime loss out of it.

To be fair, Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos got to experience a real-life Madden simulation. Hopefully, it was money well spent.

WINNER

No. 25 Iowa gets the best of both worlds: Iowa might finally get Kirk Ferentz to do something about his son, Brian, leading the offense on a road to nowhere. A stipulation in his contract states the Hawkeyes need to average 25 points per game this season for him to retain his job as offensive coordinator.

Iowa appeared to be on its way to scoring 25 points against Utah State after a 14-point first quarter. Unsurprisingly, the offense sputtered afterward, only scoring 10 points the rest of the way in a 24-14 win. It's the best possible outcome for Iowa fans: celebrate a win and get a step closer to a fresh offensive coordinator.

LOSER

Baylor Bears in hibernation: As noted earlier, Baylor lost to Texas State 42-31 in one of the biggest upsets of Week 1. The Bears were voted to finish sixth in the Big 12 football media preseason poll but looked like they could finish closer to the bottom of the league. The defense allowed 441 yards to the Sun Belt Bobcats, a bad sign for Baylor in the high-scoring Big 12.

WINNER

Wild ending at Norfolk St.: What other sport could produce an ending as illogical as the one in Virginia State-Norfolk State.

Virginia State quarterback Jordan Davis lost track of time and stepped out of bounds at his own seven-yard line on a fourth down with one second left in a 27-24 game, setting up a potential tying field goal. The ensuing snap on the attempt soared past the holder and was recovered by Virginia State for a touchdown and a 33-24 win.

The only problem with the ending is that as hard as each team tried to lose, someone had to win.
