The Wisconsin Badgers have once again received positive news regarding the potential eligibility of a veteran defensive back on the roster.
Nyzier Fourqurean, a talented corner back, transferred into the Wisconsin program after beginning his career with Grand Valley State, a Division-II program. Fourqurean has played the last two seasons with the Badgers, recording 90 tackles, two sacks, and one interception on the field for the team. Fourqurean entered the transfer portal as a three-star recruit after previously holding a verbal commitment with Vanderbilt.
Fourqurean exhausted his eligibility this past season after spending three years, including a redshirt year, with Grand Valley State which would count against his Division-I eligibility. The defensive back filed a preliminary injunction in February which granted the defensive back an extra year of eligibility on the heels of all junior college players receiving additional years of eligibility.
The injunction, however, was overturned and Fourqurean was quickly deemed ineligible for the upcoming season which dealt a tough blow to Wisconsin. The Badgers have still allowed Fourqurean to practice and will prepare for the upcoming season as though the corner back can play.
The Wisconsin Badgers recently delivered a new court filing in an effort to fight for a final year of eligibility for Fourqurean. Currently, the Badgers are expected to hear from the court in the near future after a speedy trial date has been set for September 29th, just two months after the motion was filed.
While the speedy date being set is excellent news for Fourqurean, the news also adds more question that will need to be answered in the future. First, should Fourqurean and Wisconsin win, then the defensive back would be in shape for the season but would also likely only receive a partial season to work with. No signs point towards Fourqurean sitting the season out and playing next year should the corner back receiver an extra year of eligibility.
In all reality for the Wisconsin Badgers, losing Fourqurean is a difficult lose to deal with due to the veteran presence that the corner back provides. Being a veteran and having experience at the collegiate level is not everything, but successful players are often the most intelligent on the field and Fourqurean is someone who has been just that for the Badgers.
The high IQ, successful play of Fourqurean on the field is something that the Badgers had included in plans for the upcoming season. Without Fourqurean, a hole in the defense is left and the only solution is relying upon a younger defensive back to find a way to pick up the slack for the defense.
